Asian American — this is my identity. Unlike my ancestors who faced discrimination for looking like a wartime enemy, I grew up in a time where I can be proud of my heritage. From the gohan I grew up eating around the dinner table, to my elders who exemplified values of humility, hard work, patience and perseverance, my Japanese-Filipina-Irish culture has been seamlessly woven into the fabric of my American life.
